Alejandro Davidovich Fokina had an absolutely shocking moment during his third-round clash with Holger Rune at the 2023 Wimbledon. The Spaniard chose to serve underarm during an incredibly tense situation in the fifth set tiebreaker. With the scores level pegged at 8-8, Davidovich Fokina chose to produce something out of the blue, as he tried the underarm serve.

Unfortunately, this did not catch Holger Rune off-guard, who completely latched on to the serve. The Spaniard who was leading 8-5 in the tiebreaker, now saw himself facing a match point. The sixth-seeded Dane closed out the match as he moved into the fourth round. Fans on social media however were completely blown away by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s decision-making at such an important juncture in the match.

Davidovich Fokina had his fair share of chances in the match, as he gave up two match-point opportunities. He had numerous breakpoint opportunities in the final set. However, Holger Rune managed to stand his ground. The Spaniard dropped the first set but came back to win the next two sets. Holger Rune fought back brilliantly in the final two sets to book a spot in the last 16.

Fans on social media were quick to give their thoughts on the Spaniard’s rash moment, which perhaps cost him the match. They believed that the youngster choked under pressure, as it was completely unnecessary to serve underarm.

Rune marches into the second week of the Championships for the first time in his career. Seeded sixth at Wimbledon 2023, the Dane was defeated only in the first round last time around. The Danish youngster kept his cool when it mattered the most in his third-round victory on Saturday.

As for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, he did not do much wrong during the third-round encounter. The Spaniard played some of his best tennis of the season, however, he could not keep his nerves during clutch moments.
