Emma Raducanu shot to fame when she won the 2021 US Open ladies singles title. She became the first tennis player ever to win a Grand Slam, coming straight from the Qualifiers in the Open Era. She also became the first female British tennis player in the last 44 years to win a Grand Slam singles title after Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977.

This triumph gave a lot of hopes and expectations to British tennis fans. She is also the current female British No.1. However, she has been struggling with both form and fitness since then. She is also languishing in the current WTA rankings as World No.75.

Meanwhile, former Spanish tennis player Alex Corretja has come in support of Emma Raducanu and believes that she has a great future.

“I mean she’s an unbelievably talented player, she’s got such great footwork, great forehand, great backhand, nice return and she serves also well. There’s no reason why she can’t be at the top of the game again. I have no doubt that she’s got the skills to be consistent,” he said in a recent interview given to British newspaper The Express.

Emma Raducanu has only one Grand Slam title to her name. She completed her first WTA professional tour in 2022 but had to curtail it because of a wrist injury. However, she could not break the US Open jinx. Alex Corretja also believes that the US Open 2021 triumph may have affected her growth in the sport.

“For her, it was everything all of a sudden. It started from 0 to 100 in one week and that I believe might make it difficult to understand where you are, who you are, what are your skills, what are your weaknesses,” he said.

He thinks that she will be able to make progress with time and learn to deal with the new paradigm shift soon.

“That’s why I think it’s been difficult for her to deal with all this new situation but she’s such a young girl that I’m sure if she is willing to do well, she will do. Because there’s no reason why not,” he added further.

The British tennis player participated in the ASB Classic tennis tournament to prepare well and in time for the Australian Open 2023. However, she slipped on the tennis court in her second round tie against Viktoria Kuzmova. She soon had to retire from the match. She was particularly disappointed as she walked out of court sobbing.

“So to be stopped by a freak injury, rolling an ankle is pretty disappointing, in the first week as well. I thought I was playing some pretty decent tennis,” she said giving update on her injury.

Her fans hope that the 20-year-old will be able to play in the first Grand Slam of the season.
