It’s all celebrations for Alex de Minaur and his camp following the Aussie’s win at the 2024 Acapulco Open. Playing as the defending champion, he defeated World No. 11 Casper Ruud to retain the ATP-500 title.
The World No. 9 won the finals 6-4, 6-4 to clinch his eighth career title. It was his 16th Tour final, and he now holds an 8-8 record in Tour finals. de Minaur dropped a set only twice this week in Acapulco. His three-set quarter-final win over Stefanos Tsitsipas was the first instance of him dropping a set.

The second happened against Jack Draper in the semis. The match, however, ended untimely as the Briton couldn’t continue due to an injury. The third-seeded Australian has now won 15 of his 19 matches so far this season, with two final appearances. He had earlier lost to Jannik Sinner in the Rotterdam finals.
As many expected the 25-year-old to have a blast owing to his joint-biggest career title, his answer rather left everyone in awe of him. As the action now moves to California for the upcoming 2024 Indian Wells Masters, de Minaur opted for an early flight.
Speaking on it during his on-court interview, he revealed his girlfriend, Katie Boulter, as the reason. The 27-year-old Briton has also made the finals at the WTA-500 event in San Diego. As she reaches her biggest career final, de Minaur doesn’t want to miss watching her play and has thus taken an early flight.
You know what, I cannot because I have got a 6 AM flight to go to Tijuana and go watch Katie play the finals so I am looking forward to that.Said de Minaur when asked about using his footwork for the party.
Katie Boulter to take on Marta Kostyuk in the San Diego finals
As de Minaur looks for another reason to celebrate this week, it all now lies in the hands of Boulter. The World No. 49 will take on the sixth-seeded World No. 34, Marta Kostyuk, in the finals. Both ladies will be playing in their biggest Tour finals to date.

While Kostyuk’s only Tour title came at the ATP-250 event in Texas last year, Boulter’s title came on the grass courts of Nottingham in 2023. Both of them have played just one Tour final so far and have reached the San Diego finals on the back of similar results.
They will meet professionally for the first time on the Tour. While Kostyuk will look to bank on the momentum after defeating top seed Jessica Pegula in the semis, Boulter will try to use her bigger experience to clinch the finals. Either way, an exciting clash can be expected from the two.
