Most tennis fans would argue that Nick Kyrgios has largely underperformed in his career so far. The Australian player rose to fame after beating Rafael Nadal in the 4th round of the 2014 Wimbledon championship. Kyrgios’ talent was apparent as his forehand tweener against Nadal went viral over the internet. Since then, the Aussie has reached just one Grand Slam final in which he was beaten by Serbian legend Novak Djokovic.
Nick Kyrgios has had a tough start to 2023 as he withdrew from the Australian Open due to a knee injury. After playing only once in 2023, Kyrgios has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open too in order to recover from his injury. Subsequently, his ranking has seen a huge drop due to missing out on the majority of tournaments. Kyrgios’ ranking also suffered a dent due to gaining 0 points for his Wimbledon 2022 final appearance as the ATP withdrew ranking points from the tournament.
Meanwhile, Kyrgios’ Australian counterpart Alex de Minaur has had a largely successful season this year. In March, de Minaur won his first ATP 500 title at the Mexican Open, defeating Tommy Paul. Yesterday he reached his first ATP 1000 final at the National Bank Open where he’s scheduled to play young Italian sensation Jannik Sinner in the final. As a result, Alex de Minaur will reach his highest-ever singles rankings of 12, which is higher than Kyrgios’ highest singles ranking of 13.
Tennis Twitter (now rebranded as ‘X’) didn’t go soft on Kyrgios and questioned him for his lack of dedication. Some fans questioned if de Minaur got his due attention in the media. Alex de Minaur, meanwhile, will look to make headlines as he steps out to beat Sinner in a mouth-watering clash in the final of the National Bank Open. The Aussie will reach his career-high ranking of 11 if he wins the title.

X users were quick to jump on Nick Kyrgios after his career-high rankings were bested by Alex de Minaur. The Australian tennis player never escapes headlines as his on-court and off-court antics invite significant criticism from fans and detractors alike.
Reacting to the news X users shared:
Some fans were a bit sympathetic towards Nick Kyrgios as well.
Alex de Minaur would hope that this won’t be his career-high ranking and that he would improve on it to reach the top 10. The 24-year-old will expect that he betters his highest Grand Slam finish, the quarterfinals in the 2020 US Open, at the upcoming US Open starting 28th August.
Meanwhile, Kyrgios would hope that he recovers in time for the start of next year and put a forgettable 2023 season behind him. Australian tennis fans will be praying that one of their star tennis players becomes the first Australian player since Lleyton Hewitt to become Men’s singles Grand Slam champion.
