Alexander Zverev, the German tennis star, is currently preparing for his upcoming match against Bublik at Monte Carlo. However, before his start, he took some time to speak to Eurosport and answer some questions about his career and the Roland-Garros semi-final against Rafael Nadal. Zverev’s honesty in his answers was commendable, as he reflected on what could have been a career-defining moment for him.

During the Roland-Garros semi-final in 2022, Zverev faced off against the legendary Rafael Nadal. The match was evenly poised at 7-6, 6-6, with Nadal leading the scoreline. However, Zverev had to give up the game following a terrible fall, which resulted in him being away from the circuit for six months. Reflecting on the game, Zverev spoke about how he felt that he could have won the match.

“For several reasons, I could have done it. I don’t want to sound arrogant. Rafa is obviously the best player ever on this surface so you never know what can happen. If I hadn’t been injured, of course, I could have lost that game too. Of course, he can go on to win his 14th Grand Slam. But I felt like I was playing my best tennis I’ve ever played on this surface.” he said.

Zverev stated that for several reasons, he could have won the match, and he did not want to sound arrogant. He acknowledged that Nadal is undoubtedly the best player ever on the clay surface, and anything could happen when playing against him. However, Zverev believed that he was playing his best tennis on the surface and felt that he could at least compete with Nadal, which he did.

Zverev’s statement shows his confidence in his abilities and the belief he has in himself as a player. He acknowledged that the outcome of the match always depends on small factors, but he felt that it could have been his week.
