World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in a way stunned the tennis world in Monte Carlo. Known to be as not a good player on clay, the Russian defeated all-courter Alexander Zverev. Playing in the Round of 16, Medvedev defeated Zverev 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7) in a thrilling battle on the Court Rainier III. While Zverev is certainly making a comeback since his freak injury in the 2022 French Open, the German failed to capitalize on his chances yesterday.

Medvedev saved two match points as Zverev made a double fault to eventually face the defeat. Following the match, during his on-court interview, Medvedev brought out his candid side giving an honest assessment of the match. “That was a crazy match. He served two times for the match, he probably should have done better, but that is also clay courts,” said Medvedev after the win.

The comments did not sit well with Zverev however. He expressed his anger for being targeted like this. Zverev is also known to not filter out his anger and Medvedev came under fire as a result. “He is one of the most unfair players in the world. I take fair play and sportsmanship very serious. He does not. He takes a toilet break when it’s not possible anymore. There are 1000 situations in which he feels that I start to play better and in which he tries to do something every time.

“I’m extremely disappointed from him as an athlete. Of course, you can argue that it’s not good for me that I get distracted. This should not happen to me and it’s totally my fault and it really was bad from my side. But still, I feel fair play should always be part of sports,” said Zverev speaking with Sky.

Both Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev are of the same batch. Labeled as challengers to the Big-3, the duo have been decent in matches against the golden trio. While Medvedev can boast of a Grand Slam singles title, Zverev is yet to win one. The German did find himself leading the 2020 US Open finals 2-0 going into the third set but Dominic Thiem staged an epic comeback to break the former World No. 2’s heart.

Coming back to Medvedev and Zverev, their rivalry has been interesting. The German won their first four meetings on the trot and was leading 5-1 after the duo had played six matches against each other. Medvedev then went on a 5-0 streak to level the head-to-head at 6-6. The two then split the next two matches to make it 7-7 before yesterday’s win. The Russian now leads the head-to-head 8-6.

While Medvedev’s comments have been replied to by Zverev, it will be interesting to see how Medvedev responds. The Russian lost his quarter-final to Holger Rune in straight sets as his wait for his maiden Tour title on clay continues.
