Alexander Zverev issues a clarification on Roland Garros semifinal statement; says he did not believe he was the favorite against Rafael Nadal
Alexander Zverev clarifies his comments on the 2022 French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal.
Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev
Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev were playing out a classic in the semifinals of the Roland Garros last year. However, the match came to an abrupt conclusion, as Alexander Zverev had to retire due to a season-ending injury. The match lasted for almost over three hours, with the second set yet to be completed.
Recently, Alexander Zverev stated in the media that he would have defeated Rafael Nadal, provided had he not met with an unfortunate accident. The US Open 2020 runner-up has been heavily mocked in the media for these comments for the past week. Hence, the German star has issued a clarification regarding his comments.
The 2022 French Open semi-finalist clarified that he never mentioned that he was the favorite to beat Rafael Nadal. However, he believes that he could have won the match, given the quality of tennis he was playing. “I would never have said in my life that I was the favorite against Nadal in Paris, I simply commented that I was looking competitive and we were having a great game,” said Zverev.

Alexander Zverev says his words have been misinterpreted by the media
Alexander Zverev claimed that his words have been misinterpreted by the media on several instances, and this time it was no different. “If my words were reproduced literally by the press, I would be much more open to talk, but if every time I say something, it is going to be misrepresented to make it more sellable and create a false story, I will limit myself to being politically correct and say the same as the rest,” said the German.
Alexander Zverev faced a shocking straight sets defeat in the second round of the Munich Open. The fourth seed will now head to the Madrid Masters next week, a tournament where he ended as the runner-up last time around. He was defeated by the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the final.
Alexander Zverev could only manage to reach the last 16 of the Monte Carlos Masters last week, where he bit the dust against Daniil Medvedev in three sets. The 26-year-old has been struggling for consistency after his return to the tour this season. His best result came at the Dubai Open, where he managed to reach the semifinals, losing to Andrey Rublev in straight sets.
