Alexander Zverev jokes about the blistering form of Iga Swiatek during the World Tennis League.
Alexander Zverev and Iga Swiatek
German Olympic Gold winner Alexander Zverev who has come back to action after an ankle injury is currently playing in the world Tennis League. The German has already drawn blood as he defeated the Serbian World No.5 Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-3,6-4.
He was asked a question about Polish World No.1 Iga Siwatek who is also playing in the world Tennis league. Zverev joked that the Polish is not in great form. As quoted by him, “Iga isn’t really in form. Only won two Slams. I thought she would win 3 or 4 (slams)“. Iga Swiatek is playing for Team “Kites” and Zverev is playing for Team “Hawks”. “Eagles” and “Falcons” are the other two teams playing.
Iga Swiatek’s Kites are now last in the table of the World Tennis League. Zverev’s “Hawks” is currently third. The final will be between the top two teams on December 24th. Eagles and Falcons who have played 2 ties each are in the first and second position respectively.
Iga Swiatek’s incredible 2022 season
21-year-old Polish World No.1 Iga Swiatek’s 2022 dominance resembles the prime of Serena Williams. She finished the season with a whopping number of 8 singles titles out of 17 she played, the last triumph was at San Diego Open.
The Polish had surpassed 11000 points this season. The difference between her and the second-ranked Tunisian Ons Jabeur is more than the total points of the Tunisian. This difference itself shows the dominance the Polish had on the tour this season. Her win-loss record is 67-9 this season.
Another astonishing record by Swiatek is the 22 bagels (winning a set 6-0)this season. The last one was at the WTA Finals against American Coco Gauff. This is only second to the most number of bagels in a season recorded by Serena Williams in 2013 (25 bagels).
She has won the French Open and US Open this year making her overall slam count to 3. Her total ATP titles count is 11 and 8 of them were won this year. If she stays in this form, 2023 will also be a one-woman show by the Polish World No.1.
