It was a physically draining match and Jannik Sinner suffered more than Zverev. The Italian had to get his left leg treated multiple times. On the other hand, Zverev’s agility took a hit after the game crossed the three-hour mark. In the end, it was a sweet victory for the German who announced in the on-court interview that he was back.

As Alexander Zverev was reminded by the presenter that it was his longest-ever match at the Flushing Meadows, the German grinned from ear to ear. Zverev then indirectly sent a warning to Carlos Alcaraz, saying that he was back. The 2020 US Open finalist will face the Spaniard in the quarterfinals.

“Longest match ever. I guess I can say I’m back, right? This is what I live for. What I love to do. I would’ve loved to play a bit shorter. Last year when I wasn’t able to play, this is exactly what I missed. 1:30 am playing for a packed crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium. It doesn’t get any better. This is one of the best moments of my career,” said the German ace.

When a question about his next match against Alcaraz was directly asked, the German gave a classy response. Zverev said that he is here to play and will be ready for the challenge, without caring too much about the end result.

Zverev’s thrilling win over Sinner has surely sent a message not just to Carlos Alcaraz but to the whole tennis world. The 26-year-old German has not had a great season in terms of performance at Grand Slams, so far. Zverev had made it to only one semifinal (at the French Open) out of three Grand Slam events he played. Now, with a quarterfinal qualification, this is the German’s second-best performance so far.
