Alexander Zverev came very close to beating Rafael Nadal in the semi-final round of the French Open 2022. However, a sudden, unfortunate and nasty injury during the match saw him walk out of the court on crutches. This injury led him to miss out rest of the ATP tour for the rest of the season.
He is slowly trying to find his rhythm. This season he played in many tournaments in the last couple of months and is slowly making steady progress. With the momentum he has gained, he is looking to advance in the later stages of the Dubai Tennis Championships 2023. However, even after eight months, questions over what happened in the match against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros 2022.
The German got really furious when he was asked about if he wanted a rematch against the Spaniard at Roland Garros this year and how he is preparing for the French Open 2023.
“Guys, we’re in Dubai. Let’s focus on Dubai because I’m in the semifinals of a big tournament. We are in February. Roland Garros is end of May. There’s still very big tournaments ahead. Right now I’m not really thinking about Roland Garros. It’s not my thought process,” he answered.
“I’m playing the semifinals of Dubai tomorrow either against world No. 5 in Rublev or a very in-form Dutchman tomorrow. Right now my mind, that’s what is in my head, not how I will play in Roland Garros,” he said wanting reporters to talk about his next match.

Alexander Zverev wants to emulate The Big Four
The 25-year old has made it to the semi-finals round of the Dubai Tennis Championships. This may be his best performance this season after failing to make a deeper run in the first few tournaments. However, there was a time when he was reeling under immense pain, trying to recover from an ankle injury that he sustained last season.
Alexander Zverev made his return this season in the mixed-gender format competition United Cup 2023. However, he was not able to play according to his expectations. He was also criticized for his game. In these tough times, he turned towards other great players such as Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal, who had long and glorious careers but they too struggled both with form and fitness over these years.
“My game was not great at times and didn’t start the match very well, but found a way to win. I am sure, I will be playing the next few matches much better. Sometimes that’s what makes the best players, finding a way out to win when you are not playing well. Roger, Rafa, Novak, and Andy did that during the last 20 years. I am trying to learn from them,” he said in an interview on the sidelines of the Dubai Tennis Championships.
