Hubert Hurkacz with the 2022 Halle Open trophy

World No. 12 Hubert Hurkacz clinches his first Grass title as he defeated World No. 1 and top seed Daniil Medvedev in the finals of the 2022 Halle Open. Hurkacz, playing in his first-ever Grasscourt tournament finals won the match 6-1, 6-4 in just 63 minutes to win his first ATP-500 title in the process and win his 5th career title and first of the season.

Given his semi-final run in the 2021 Wimbledon, Hurkacz was expected to give a tough fight to Medvedev but a steamroll performance like this in the finals was not expected. Hurkacz fired 9 aces, 22 winners, converted 3 of his 8 breakpoints and did not concede a single break opportunity for the Russian. Medvedev from the other side of the net had 3 aces, 18 winners, and 15 unforced errors to Hubert’s 9 ending the match with 41 points while the Pole clinched the finals with 60 points won.

Hurkacz’s title takes him into the Top-10 once again as the Pole will now look to carry the form going into the 2022 Wimbledon Championships having made it to the semi-finals last year after the historic win over Roger Federer in the quarter-finals when he bagelled the 8-time champion to defeat him in straight-sets.

“I’m super excited, I’ve been waiting a little bit for my first [title] this year. I’m happy to win my first ATP 500 title and of course, on the grass, it is very special. I was serving pretty good today and got a little bit of momentum from the first game. I saved a couple of deuces on my service game and then I managed to break Daniil’s serve so I definitely got a little bit of momentum.

“I’m very happy with the win in front of such a great crowd here. Daniil is an unbelievable player. He’s the best player in the world so it’s very tricky to play him. All the right shots went my way at the beginning, so I definitely gained a lot of momentum from that,” said Hurkacz during his on-court interview at the trophy presentation ceremony.
