Andrey Rublev has admitted that he wanted to die for a win against Alex de Minaur after the contest lasted for four hours and 14 minutes.
The Russian’s outstanding display earned him an extended, perfect start to the 2024 season. Rublev ended his five-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents as the fierce patriotic home crowd cheered him to victory in a five-set 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-0 thriller win at the Rod Laver Arena in the Australian Open.
Following the highly entertaining contest, Andrey Rublev was so fatigued that he kept jostling and then said that he could not move but was super happy about winning the biggest ticket in town.
I started to feel a little bit of pain but that's normal after four hours with intensity. I just tried not to think about it and to push myself. I started to tell to myself, no, you’re going to die today, but you will do everything. You will find energy. And then somehow I started to play better and better, and I found more energy and I was able to win.Rublev said of his physical condition in the fifth set.
Rublev will have to convert his 10th Major title quarterfinal into his first Grand Slam semi-final when he meets World No. 4 Jannik Sinner on Tuesday.
The Russian star has established himself as a top player since his eminence in the top 10 in 2020. At the beginning of the season, he won the Hong Kong Open in an emphatic way.

Andrey Rublev, who was in danger of crashing out of the Australian Open, rallied back to victory over Alex de Minuar.
The 14,000 fans had many things to cheer as Rublev began with a 6-4 win but dramatically lost the next two sets in tiebreak 6-7(5), 6-7(4), before turning the tide around in the fourth and fifth rounds 6-3, 6-0 to silence the Australian crowd.
Alex de Minaur has been in great form this season, especially after earning his biggest win against Novak Djokovic,but thet Aussie had no more firepower in the fifth round as he kept giving away points to Rublev.
Andrey Rublev, who is without a loss this season, kept his pace in the fifth set, clubbing four clean winners as he took the first eight points to set his pace for his 300th match win of his career.
