Things have been seriously wrong with Andy Murray for quite a while now, and it seems like he has reached the twilight of his career.
If his loss against French player Benoit Paire showed something last night, it was that the former World No. 1 is no longer the great player he once used to be, and needs to buckle up for the upcoming tournaments.
Before the Round of 32 matches between Andy Murray and Benoit Paire in the 2024 Montpellier Open, the Frenchman had not won in his last eighteen matches. Yet, after losing his first set against Murray, he made a comeback in the second set to win it 7-6. He then ended up winning the third set, too, with pure conviction. Benoit Paire defeated Andy Murray 6-3.
The same thing has happened with Andy Murray a couple of times in the recent past. The British win the first set but somehow fail to keep the momentum going in the rest of the sets, and there is a visible downfall in his performance across the sets.
This shows that he is not physically fit to go on for many sets. Unfortunately, what could potentially be a great career was plagued by consistent injuries.
For the uninitiated, Andy Murray won his last trophy in 2019 at the Antwerp Open. He has made it to a few finals after that, though. He was the runner-up in the Doha Open in 2023, the Stuttgart Open, and the Sydney Open in 2022.
Murray’s performance in the Doha Open, which took place last February, was worthy of praise. He defeated Lorenzo Sonego and Alexander Zverev en route to the final but lost to Daniil Medvedev eventually.
Fans react to Andy Murray’s loss against Benoit Paire
After Murray’s loss to Benoit Paire, fans were highly sympathetic towards him on social media. They pointed out that he seemed lost on the court nowadays and wished to see at least one more memorable and happy moment to take with them before he retires.
However, the same level of understanding was missing among the fans who were present in the statistics and started booing the legend after he lost the second set.
He’s gone and it’s sad to see, he’s not even playing top 100 level tennis, around this time last year Murray ground out the last remnants of what he had left level wise and it was memorable, he’s 8-16 post I.Wells 2023 though with just 1 top 50 win on the main tour.A particular fan wrote on X.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
The British will now move his focus to the Marseille Open, which starts on 5th February before participating in the Doha Open where he has a great record.
