In a recent interview with The Independent, British tennis player Andy Murray expressed a desire to face Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic. With both of them preparing for the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, Murray and fans alike wish for an encounter between the two during the tournament.
Despite their storied rivalry, the two have not faced each other since their encounter in Doha in 2017. Murray reminisces about their matches, saying, “I can’t remember the last time we played. It was a long time ago. And yeah, I would love the chance to play against him again, whether that’s at Wimbledon or further down the line.” The prospect of a match against Djokovic excites Murray, as he believes it would be a significant challenge.
Since their last match in 2017, Murray’s dominance on the tour has declined owing to his hip injury, while Novak is as consistent and dominant as ever.
Andy Murray’s 2023 season so far
Andy Murray’s form in 2023 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. He began the year with impressive five-set victories over Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Australian Open. The Briton followed up these wins by making it to the final of the ATP 250 in Doha. However, his performance on clay was not as strong, leading him to skip Roland Garros. Despite this setback, Murray made a strong entry to the Grass season, winning two successive challenger titles on grass.
However, despite his recent successes, Murray finds himself unseeded at Wimbledon 2023 because of an early-round exit at the ATP 500 at the Queen’s Club Championships last week. This makes him a dangerous floater in the draw, capable of causing trouble for any of the top-ranked players in the early rounds.
Murray himself is well aware of this fact and understands the probability of facing a top seed in the opening round. He expressed his preference for facing a top seed later in the tournament, stating, “Ideally, that wouldn’t happen right at the beginning. I would obviously want that to happen, probably later in the tournament.”
As Andy Murray prepares for another Wimbledon campaign, the possibility of a showdown with Novak Djokovic looms large. Murray’s rollercoaster form, his desire for a match against Djokovic, and his remarkable record against the Serbian on grass certainly contribute to the intrigue surrounding this particular matchup.
With that being said, regardless of the outcome of the much-awaited showdown, we can be sure that his presence at Wimbledon and his impact on the sport will continue to be celebrated.
