Andy Murray revealed on his Twitter account that he ran into the doctor who had told him that his long-time hip injury could be fixed but at the cost of his playing career. The meeting came after Murray won his second consecutive five-setter game at the 2023 Australian Open against Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Murray wrote, “2 days ago I randomly bumped into the doctor who in 2017 told me “the good news is the problem you have in your hip can be fixed but you won’t be able to play professional sport again.” I think we dispelled that myth the last 5 days.?Goodnight”

Former World No.1 Murray has looked fitter than ever at this edition of the Australian Open. He finally seems to have found consistency to his game after a long spell in the wilderness after his hip surgery in 2017b and 2018. The Scotsman entered the tournament ranked World No.49 with not many expectations of him. But he still surprised and entertained many. The three-time Grand Slam champion shocked thirteenth seed Matteo Berrettini in the first round.

Murray showed incredible endurance to win a game that seemed to be getting away from him. He then proceeded to have an even better clash against local boy Kokkinakis. Murray returned from two sets down to take the match to the fifth set. He showed remarkable concentration and resilience to win the match, which featured three seven-game sets. The match was the second longest at the Australian Open.

These wins feel even more significant when Murray’s condition a few years ago is considered. The Scotsman had to undergo delicate hip surgery and his professional career was still on the line. He has fought hard for the last five years to get close to the level that made him No.1. He seems to be edging ever closer to that level. Murray has stated that his ambition till he retires will be to win another Grand Slam title.

Murray showed clear signs of fatigue in the third-round match against Roberto Bautista Agut. The Scotsman was exhausted after a 4 am finish to a five-hour forty-five-minute clash against Kokkinakis in the second round. Murray fought valiantly for three and a half hours in this one but couldn’t win.

He seemed to struggle physically initially, with drop shots causing him a problem. He lost the first set 6-1. But all was not lost. Murray, a veteran of multiple Grand Slam tournaments, rallied the crowd with fist pumps and celebrations at every point. The crowd’s backing of Murray seemed to raise the pressure on Agut. Murray won the second set as a result. But after that, he appeared to have nothing left in the tank.

Murray lost the following two sets and crashed out of the Slam. But he gave crowds in Melbourne plenty of memories. Murray leaves having played close to 14 hours of tennis. And he put on a show.
