World No. 49 Andy Murray continues to struggle for form in 2024. The 3-time Grand Slam title winner suffered a three-set defeat to Frenchman Benoit Paire in Open Sud de France in Montpellier.
Paire won their first-round duel 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to knock the 2-time Wimbledon winner out. With the defeat, the former World No. 1 is now 0-3 for the season. Playing with a metal hip is definitely challenging. Murray’s challenges, however, are only increasing with recurrent bouts with injuries too.
With every defeat, questions about his continuing as a pro are raised. Many believe it’s about time the Briton realizes his retirement and steps away from the sport. Many argue that knowing his fighting spirit, he won’t sit out unless he knows he can’t win anymore.
Despite his challenges, he has put in some great performances. His five-set win over Thanasi Kokkinakis at the 2023 Australian Open that ended in the early hours of the morning is a testament to that. Yet, he continues to be questioned on his fitness and delaying retirement.
Recently, BBC Scotland carried out an article about Murray questioning how long can he actually go. The former World No. 1 was rightly offended by it and gave a blunt and honest reply to the journalist.
Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour. I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently. I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of.tweeted the Briton.
Netizens led by Martina Navratilova unite in support of Andy Murray over his decision to continue
Murray’s tweet quickly went viral, triggering reactions from many. One of them was from tennis great Martina Navratilova. The American not only praised Murray for his reply, but she also lashed out at the journalist for questioning the legacy of the Briton.
Supporting Murray and Martina’s take were many netizens who promptly showed their support towards the two-time Olympic gold medalist.
With the overwhelming support for him, it would surely be reassuring for Murray that his decision to continue despite his struggles isn’t wrong. He has time and again proved his worth and deserves every chance to do it again.
