Former tennis superstar Andy Roddick has lauded 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff with a string of praises on his page, Betway Insider. He was once among those who questioned the post Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams era in tennis.
However, now he has become one of the staunchest advocates of the sport’s evolving landscape. The American believes that Gauff is going to add many more accolades to her collection in the coming future.
In the wake of Gauff’s remarkable victory at the US Open, Roddick couldn’t help but praise the rising teen sensation while reflecting on the changing dynamics of professional tennis. The significance of Gauff’s US Open victory, especially in the first year after Serena Williams‘ retirement, was not missed by Roddick. He believes that winning the US Open just a year after Serena’s retirement is very poetic, considering Gauff considered the Williams sisters her idols.
Roddick also praised Gauff’s versatility and mental toughness throughout the competition, particularly during difficult circumstances. She didn’t play her best in every match, so the most impressive thing to him was the change in tactics and turning her ordinary days into three-set victories.
Roddick emphasized Gauff’s tactical ability in the final, as she changed her game plan mid-match to defeat her opponent. As per Roddick, Gauff tried to go more toe-to-toe with Aryna Sabalenka in the first set and realized that wasn’t going to work. So she needed to make her hit as many shots as possible and rely on her legs.
“The difference is that she’s not going to stop at one. There are dominant forces in women’s tennis, but I don’t think three players are going to win 66 of the next however many Slams, so there’s a much better runway for her,” commented Roddick speaking with Betway.
Andy Roddick foresees women’s tennis parity resembling the 80s
Andy Roddick has highlighted an intriguing trend in tennis: increasing parity among women’s Grand Slam champions. He compared it to the men’s tennis scene in the 1980s, when numerous players had a chance to win major titles, signifying a change away from the age of dominance by a chosen few.
“With different women’s winners at the four Slams this year, there’s an intriguing level of parity. It seems to be building towards men’s tennis in the 80s,” he observed.
The 1980s were a watershed moment in men’s tennis, with a varied set of champions emerging. Players such as Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, and Mats Wilander traded victories, ushering in an era of unpredictability and competition.
“You had a bunch of players with the potential to win a handful rather than everything resting on one or two people,” he added.
Roddick’s comparison mirrors the changing landscape of women’s tennis, where a diverse range of players with varying backgrounds and playing styles are now competing for Grand Slam titles. This year alone, each of the four majors has had a different champion, displaying a welcome diversity in the winners’ circle.
