American tennis coach Rick Macci has predicted that Coco Gauff will quickly rise to World No. 1, following the footsteps of Serena and Venus Williams. On account of their similar backgrounds, the US Open champ has always been compared to the Williams sisters. This claim by Macci has given more ground to work on with these comparisons.
Rick Macci took to Twitter (now called X) to share his experience on a podcast he had just done. He revealed that he was asked the number one question in the tennis world, the comparisons between Gauff and the Williams’. “Just finished a podcast and was asked the number ONE common thread Coco Gauff, Serena Williams and Venus Williams have in common. The Number ONE common thread is all three have been or will be No.1,” revealed Macci.
The American coach was in the perfect position to answer this particular question. He has been the coach to quite a few prominent tennis figures. However, what makes him the most qualified in this situation is that he has been the coach to the Williams sisters in their earlier days. A few other tennis players he has coached include Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and many others. Based on his observations, he has predicted that the American teen will inevitably become World No.1.
Coco Gauff has very frequently been subjected to comparisons with the Williams sisters, especially with her idol Serena Williams. However, after the US Open 2023, when she won her first Grand Slam, these similarities have been intensified. With her title at the US Open, Coco Gauff is the youngest player to win at Flushing Meadows, since Serena Williams in 1999. These commonalities have not been left unnoticed by fans and professionals alike.
Rick Macci talks about Coco Gauff’s future in the sport
Rick Macci took to Twitter to make a bold statement regarding Coco Gauff. “More Grand Slams baking in the Gauff oven,” said Macci. He predicted that the American has a lot more laurels to be added to her list.
The American teen currently has six WTA titles under her belt, the most recent being the US Open. Over the past few months, Gauff has been in burning form, with a masters 1000 title at Cincinnati preceding her entry into her home Slam. Apart from this, she has also won the 2023 edition of the Miami Open.
The 2023 season has proved to be the best one for the American till date. However, Rick Macci predicts that this year is only the beginning of her hopefully illustrious career. However, the expectations seem to be piling up on the youngster’s shoulders as the tennis world continues its comparison of Gauff and veteran tennis player, Serena Williams.
