American former tennis player Andy Roddick made a harsh assessment of Andrey Rublev after his meltdown at the ATP Finals round-robin match against Carlos Alcaraz. The Russian was pushed to self-harm as he handed over a frustratingly easy win to the two-time Grand Slam champion.

Andrey Rublev has frequently showcased his short temper at high-pressure matches. The ATP Finals round-robin match at Turin against Alcaraz had him beating his own knee with his racket until they were bleeding. The Vienna Open was one other such incident, where Rublev had a similar incident. Off the court, Rublev is considered one of the nicest guys on the tour. However, once he gets on the court, he is a completely different person. He is prone to similar incidents of bursts of rage.

Andy Roddick was worried for the Russian following his outbursts. He was not sure whether Rublev would have a future at the tournament if he did not get a handle on his emotions. The former World No.1 said on the Tennis Channel:

Rublev just looks super p***ed this week. I don't know if he's gonna be able to suck it up. I think he is looking for the exit door.

The American had made an accurate judgement of Rublev’s situation. He had been winless so far, which automatically knocked him out of the race for the semi-finals. The Russian’s season seemed to be going so well so far. However, the ATP Final was an utter failure for him, with losses to both Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

Andy Roddick comments on Alexander Zverev’s serve

Germany’s Alexander Zverev has had a remarkable comeback story. Despite being out from injury at the 2022 French Open, he has managed to compete for titles in the 2023 season. The two-time champion at the ATP Final has made it to the tournament once again after not having been qualified in 2022.

Andy Roddick had high praise to place on the German’s serve. He said:

I love the rhythm on Zverev's serve. I've mentioned it a couple of times this week, but it looks as fluid as I've ever seen it this week.

The American was pleased with Zverev’s fluid serves. Just at the beginning of the season, the German admitted to having had to deal with the pain. However, it was a quick leap from there to his game right now.

Roddick also analyzed that Zverev was playing a really good game. He was also supportive of Zverev’s future in the tournament. The German was at the height of his form just before his injury. While it may be a while before he gets it back, he is certainly on the right path to do so. Nevertheless, Zverev has been improving exponentially day by day.
