Andy Roddick recently took to Twitter to call out the inclusion of Team Canada at this year’s Davis Cup. Roddick wrote, “Canada was given a wildcard into this round after losing to qualify for this stage ….. tough to consider them legitimate if they win this whole thing,” the questioning was justified as Team Canada received a wild-card entry into the tournament after losing out in the qualifiers earlier.

Team Canada qualifies for the quarter-final stage of the Davis Cup

Earlier during the qualifier stages of the 2022 Davis Cup, Team Canada was eliminated by the Netherlands in March. However, they were given another shot at competing at the Davis Cup this year with a wild-card entry. The entry came through as Russia was banned from participating in the tournament due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Canada’s Felix-Auger Aliassime stunned US Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz, as Canada went up against Team Spain in group B. Canada won the tie against Spain by 2-1 and made their way into the quarter-finals stage of the tournament. Andy Roddick’s comments on Team Canada’s inclusion at the Davis Cup stirred up a lot of controversy.

Many fans accused the former tennis professional of having a bias towards Canadians. The accusations were quickly cleared by Andy Roddick as he tweeted, “Definitely not. Could be any team with the same circumstances. I actually love watching Felix play and he comes off as a really good dude. More knowing how many tough losses we took in DCup before we won it. Just seems off.”
