The Wimbledon ban has been a subject of great debate in the tennis world. It was a shocking decision from Wimbledon as they announced that the Russian and Belarusian players wouldn’t be allowed to compete in the Championships. This decision was taken in the light of the Russian-Ukraine war. This move was criticized by many top players on both men’s and women’s sides, as they believed that it was not right to mix sports with politics.

There have also been players who support this decision, and Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian number 1, is one of the most prominent supporters. The Russian Tennis Federation also tried to retaliate by enforcing a ban of their own on the Kremlin Cup, held in Moscow, a tournament which was suspended this year due to the war.

Shamil Tarpischev, the President of the currently suspended Russian Tennis Federation, didn’t take kindly to Elina Svitolina’s social media war against Russia and highlighted the war crimes of Russia. She also lauded Wimbledon for taking such a strong step in an attempt to echo the anti-war sentiment.

Tarpischev called Elina Svitolina ‘a nobody’. He said:

“There is no need to pay attention [to what Svitolina says]; this is not only my opinion but also what lawyers think. Because of any statement, we [Russian players] can be excluded from some competitions. Now we are playing; everything is fine with us. It’s stupid to react at all. Who is Svitolina? Absolutely nobody.

The former world number 1, Andy Roddick, has hit back on Tarpischev after the president called Svitolina ‘a nobody’. Roddick didn’t hold back on this comment by Tarpischev. He highlighted that Tarpischev‘s professional statistics are so inconsequential that it might be a shame to call him a singles player at all, so he has no ground to call a person who has achieved infinitely more than he ‘a nobody’.

Elina Svitolina continues to be on a hiatus and the fans would be hoping for her to return at the French Open.
