Anett Kontaveit leaves press conference in tears as she ACCUSES the ‘very difficult’ crowd for her loss against Serena Williams at the US Open

World No.2 Anett Kontaveit crashed out of the second round of the 2022 US Open in the hands of 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams. Despite playing good tennis, she lost the match in three sets 6-7(4),6-2,2-6.
All the limelight of the match was on Serena given the high stakes. This is Serena’s farewell tournament as she announced a few weeks ago that she’d be retiring from the sport after the US Open.
So Kontaveit had the chance to retire Serena and given the American’s form, the No.2 seed was the favorite to win the match. But she succumbed to pressure and couldn’t capitalize on the important moments of the match. Serena’s serve was a little too much for her at times but the main reason for her loss is that she wasn’t able to deliver under pressure.
The crowd was obviously pro-Serena since it’s this could’ve been the last match of her career but at times, it looked like unintentionally, they were going against Kontaveit too. The constant cheering on her errors, and booing on close calls were some of the things that were uncalled for.

Addressing the post-match press conference, Kontaveit broke down midway while answering a question in Estonian and stormed out of the press room in tears. At the start, she was happy with her play and spoke highly about Serena until an Estonian reporter whether there was any difference between losing and losing to Serena.
“I definitely had no shame losing to Serena, it was very difficult with the crowd,” she said with tears in her eyes before she broke down and left the press room.
The reporter who later asked the question apologized for his unintentional mistake that triggered Kontaveit. “I’m sorry. It wasn’t my intention at all. I was just thanking her for the greatest match that one Estonian can experience via television. She told that she don’t have to be embarrassed by loss against Serena and that the crowd was really hard, and that was it,” he revealed.
