German player Angelique Kerber in a recent interview with Bild, a German tabloid newspaper expressed that she does not want to follow American star, Venus Williams’ path of forcing her body to play at the age of 43. In the interview, where she talked about her life off tennis and her experience as a mother, she expressed admiration for Williams but shared that it’s not her plan to continue playing at such an age.
The 3-time grand slam winner also hinted that she might be interested in a potential coaching career in the future but emphasized that it’s too early to plan anything as such.
“Hats off to what (Venus) does. She still has that passion, but still playing at 43 isn’t exactly my plan.”, said the German. So probably more as a coach, although it’s still a bit early for such considerations, as my goals now are I’ll see what my role in tennis will be like later, but probably not as an active player at 43.“
Venus Williams has been playing professional tennis since the age of 14 and then has won seven grand slams. Currently, she is 43 years old and still continues to play on the court. Recently she showed an exceptional performance in the Birmingham Classic, eventually reaching the final but unfortunately lost to Latvian player Jelena Ostapenko. She is now set to participate in the Wimbledon where she has got a wild card entry.

Angelique Kerber plans to get back on court next year
In the interview with Bild, Angelique Kerber revealed that she has high expectations from herself like before which she does not want to change. However, she did acknowledge the fact that a comeback won’t be easy and stressed that her return should not be merely for the sake of playing. She went on to assert that she does not want to prove to anyone and that just wants to play a good game.
Consequently, the tennis star is taking her time to ensure she reaches peak physical condition. Although she could potentially participate in Wimbledon and the US Open this year, Kerber admitted that her current level of fitness does not align with her envisioned standards. Her primary focus is on competing in Grand Slam tournaments, which is where she is channeling her efforts. Additionally, she has her sights set on the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The former world number one has previously demonstrated her immense talent and fierce determination, making her a formidable force in the tennis world. While Kerber’s decision not to follow in Venus Williams’ footsteps may diverge from popular expectations, it showcases her unique vision for her future in the sport.
