“Are you playing for a computer ranking?” Martina Navratilova slams Naomi Osaka for her comments on Wimbledon

Martina Navratilova weighed in on this year Wimbledon with no points on offer for the players. The former world No.1 was on Piers Morgan’s show and talked about players backing out of Wimbledon just because there were no points on offer.

Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the support given to Russia by Belarus, Wimbledon decided to ban all Russian and Belarusian players from contesting at Wimbledon 2022. The decision received wide criticism from players and fans all over the world. Finally, ATP and WTA decided to rip the points off this year at Wimbledon. Meaning that the player who wins Wimbledon 2022 won’t receive any points and his ranking will remain the same if they play or not.

Naomi Osaka when asked about her plans on contesting in a tournament without points said, “I am not one-hundred percent sure if I am going to go there. I would love to go just to get some experience on the grass court. I wouldn’t like to say it’s pointless – no pun intended, but I am the type of player that gets motivated by seeing my ranking go up.”

Martina Navratilova on Piers Morgan’s show said, “I don’t understand that view that players wouldn’t play because there were no points. So, are you playing for a computer ranking? I just wanted to hold that trophy – the Venus Rosewater Dish. I would like to sit down with her and tell her about the history of Wimbledon.”
