Aryna Sabalenka‘s rise this year has been extraordinary. She has been able to work on her weaknesses and emerged as one of the fiercest competitors on the court this season.
The Belarusian is the current World No.2 and looks like the only one who can challenge Iga Swiatek and her No.1 position. She too is eager to climb to the No.1 spot in the WTA singles rankings. However, this is going to be a hard challenge for her as Iga Swiatek is looking to have finally found her form.
Iga Swiatek won the Qatar Open and the Stuttgart Open this season. Recently, Aryna Sabalenka lost the final against the Polish tennis professional at Stuttgart. The WTA tour has come around in Madrid, Spain, for the Madrid Open tournament.
The Belarusian hope that she will be able to surpass Iga Swiatek in the WTA singles rankings this year. However, in a recent interview, she said that she does not think it will be an easy job as Iga Swiatek, too, will try to improve her record in the Madrid Open.
“Iga is doing well and I think she is not feeling super pressure of defending so many titles. It’s going to be really tough for me. I have to be really focused and I have to get to the last stages of the tournament(s) to become number one. I’m trying to not focus on that. I am trying to focus on my game because I know that, if I am going to bring my game and if I am going to play my best, I will get there. So I am trying to focus on myself,” Aryna Sabalenka said.
Aryna Sabalenka won the Madrid Open in 2021; however, she was knocked out of this event last year after losing to Amanda Anisimova.

Can Aryna Sabalenka win the Madrid Open 2023?
The Belarusian will try hard for glory this season in Madrid. This is the first WTA Masters 1000 tournament that will be played on the clay surface and Aryna Sabalenka wants her to make it count.
The Madrid Open and the Italian Open are fertile grounds to prepare well for the upcoming French Open tournament. Hence, winning a WTA Masters 1000 tournament in Spain can help her develop morale and confidence for the rest of the season.
However, this is not going to be an easy task as even besides Iga Swiatek, competition levels have increased tremendously compared to last year. Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova are emerging threats for the whole competition on the tour. Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff can also make things difficult for Aryna Sabalenka.
Hence, Aryna Sabalenka does have a chance to win the Madrid Open singles title for the second time in her career and move to win some valuable ranking points, which can help her one step closer to the coveted No.1 rank. She will start her campaign in this tournament by playing against Sorana Cirstea.
