World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has recently cruised past People’s Champion and World No. 5 Ons Jabeur in the ongoing Cincinnati Open. The two top stars of the tennis world faced off at the quarterfinals with Sabalenka in the hope of revenging her defeat to Ons at the recently played Wimbledon semi-finals. Sabalenka was successful enough to get the better of the Tunisian star this time, beating her in straight sets.
Sabalenka won the match 7-5, 6-3, and was later asked to comment on her win at the post-match on-court interview. An excited and joyful Sabalenka answered the interviewer, expressing her happiness about qualifying for the semi-finals for the first time since 2019. She was also kind enough to congratulate Ons Jabeur on her fighting spirit throughout the match and how much of a tricky opponent she has been during their matches.
Sabalenka has posed the issue of how much Jabeur has been annoying her during matches pushing her to the absolute limits every time they face each other. She said, “I’m a little sad for Ons. I really hope she’ll recover soon & be ready for the US Open. She’s such an unbelievable player. She annoys me a lot… in a good way. Really tricky opponent. Super happy I was able to win this match”
Will Sabalenka be able to make it count in the final stages this time?
Aryna Sabalenka has been quite consistent in all the tournaments in the initial stages but has grown popular among tennis fans for her inconsistency in the final stages. She has fumbled and bottled her confidence right when it mattered the most, bowing out of the tournaments at the semi-finals or the finals in the majority of the competitions.
She recently lost against Ons Jabeur at the Wimbledon Championships in the semis even after winning the first set, and she was the highest-seeded player among the rest of the lot.
She committed the same mistake at the Indian Wells Masters, the Stuttgart Open, and also at the Roland Garros, losing to Elena Rykabina, Iga Swiatek, and Karolína Muchova, respectively. She faces Muchova yet again on Sunday for a semi-final clash with a chance to qualify for the finals of the Cincinnati Open.
