Aryna Sabalenka has expressed her dissatisfaction with the WTA’s decision-making process. It was particularly regarding the choice of Cancun as the venue for the WTA Finals. She believes that the organization should involve players more in decisions that directly impact them.
The Belarusian’s criticism stems from the lack of player consultation before the announcement of Cancun as the host city.
That's the problem. They just announced it, & that's it. Some of the players just saw a tweet & were like 'Okay, we're playing in Cancun.' It's just like they made the decision & that's it.Aryna Sabalenka said via Cancun Press
The 25-year-old emphasized the importance of player involvement, suggesting that the WTA should seek players’ input on crucial decisions. She further added:
That's the problem. That they're not asking all the players where they would like to play. I would like to be involved in these kind of decisions. I have to play here. Having this ability to control these decisions would be really helpful.
The World No.1’s comments fall in the same line of thought as WTA stalwarts Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, who have spoken about their involvement in WTA decisions during their careers. Sabalenka believes that the WTA should re-establish this practice, allowing players to have a greater voice in matters that affect their professional lives.
The WTA has yet to respond to Sabalenka’s criticism, but her comments come from undeniable logic. Scheduling back to back tournaments not only drain players out but also increase the risk of injuries that can sideline their careers as a whole. Now, it remains to be seen whether the WTA will take steps to address Sabalenka’s concerns and increase player participation in the future.
Aryna Sabalenka faces defeat in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals
Due to inclement weather, the second semi-final between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek was rescheduled for Sunday. It disrupted the schedule and forced both the singles and doubles finals to be moved to Monday, the reserve day.
Upon the match’s resumption, Iga Swiatek was quick to assert her dominance. She broke Sabalenka in the opening game and maintained control throughout. She never dropped serve and swiftly defeated the top-ranked Belarusian in just 1 hour and 36 minutes.
Swiatek’s impressive run to the final has resulted in only 19 lost games, the fewest of any player at the WTA Finals since Justine Henin in 2007.
A victory over Pegula on Monday would solidify Swiatek’s position as the year-end world number one for the second consecutive season. If not, Sabalenka will retain the top spot and conclude the year at the pinnacle for the first time in her career.
