What record did Aryna Sabalenka script after defending her Australian Open crown?
After this victory over Qinwen Zheng, Aryna Sabalenka now has a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head record. Before the Australian Open final, the players faced each other in the 2023 US Open quarterfinals, which Sabalenka won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
In the final, Sabalenka hit three aces, while Zheng hit six. Zheng, however, committed six double faults, while Sabalenka made no such mistakes. But the Chinese youngster served 54 aces throughout the Australian Open (the most in the tournament this year).
The Belarusian defended her crown in Melbourne without dropping a single set. This made Sabalenka the only fifth player (since 2000) to win the Australian Open without losing a set. The players who did this before her are Lindsay Davenport (2000), Maria Sharapova (2008), Serena Williams (2017), and Ashleigh Barty (2022).
After defending her title, she joined the list of players who have won successive Australian Open trophies since 2000. They are Victoria Azarenka (2012 and 2023), Williams (2009 and 2010), and Jennifer Capriati (2001 and 2002).
This victory helped Sabalenka achieve an 11-1 win-loss record in 2024. The defeat came in the Brisbane International where she lost to Elena Rybakina in the final 0-6, 3-6.
The Belarusian registered 14 consecutive wins at the Australian Open and holds a 25-5 win-loss record. Overall, she has a 66-22 win-loss record in all the Grand Slam events. She also has now bagged 14 WTA titles so far.
