As the top eight women’s tennis players in the world gear up for the final showdown in Cancun Mexico, at the 2023 WTA Finals, Martina Navratilova has heaped praise on Aryna Sabalenka for her consistency in Majors in 2023. The American tennis legend has also backed Sabalenka to defend her World No.1 crown and end as the year-end No.1 as Iga Swiatek poses a threat to snatch it back.
Martina Navratilova hailed Aryna Sabalenka for her consistent good showing at the tournaments. The former American ace then talked about Aryna Sabalenka becoming the World No.1. The 67-year-old American said that she did not expect the Belarusian to dethrone Swiatek to go to the top in the WTA rankings.
Martina Navratilova backed Sabalenka to come good at the year-end tournament just like she has done so far this season and also to finish as the year-end No.1.
Consistent enough, but most consistent in the majors, right? That’s where the numbers come in. I thought that Iga was going to finish the year No.1, but Ayrna caught her. So, the No.1 is up for grabs. … She’s played the most consistently in the big events, and I expect her to do that again in this one...The pressure’s off and she’s probably going to finish with the No.1 --- I bet she didn’t expect that at the beginning of the year.Martina Navratilova said to WTA in an interview.
Martina Navratilova feels Aryna Sabalenka will make up for the US Open loss in Mexico
Martina Navratilova talked about Aryna Sabalenka’s chances at the 2023 WTA Finals. The former American tennis ace believes Sabalenka should go all the way and make up for the loss at the 2023 US Open finals.
She also talked about the Belarusian’s performance in Guadalajara and claimed that while Sabalenka had issues with the bounce there, the conditions in Cancun would suit her.
I know she wasn’t that happy in Guadalajara -- the ball was flying on her too much -- but I think in Cancun she’ll have an easier time. Being at sea level, she should be full of confidence. Unless there is some scar tissue from the US Open final -- she knows she could have won, but didn’t. She just didn’t play her best tennis.Navratilova talked about Sabalenka’s chances at the WTA Finals.
Notably, Aryna Sabalenka has been drawn into the Bacalar Group with Maria Sakkari, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina. The World No.1 will open her campaign against Greek ace Sakkari who calls Mexico her second home. Sabalenka can meet her nemesis Iga Swiatek not before the semifinals. Talking about her chances, the Belarusian said that everyone is the favorite to win the tournament.
Notably, this is Sabalenka’s third consecutive qualification for the WTA Finals. While she had a group-stage exit at the 2021 WTA Finals, Sabalenka reached the finals in the 2022 edition of the year-end tournament. She lost to Caroline Garcia and missed out on a chance to lay hands on her maiden WTA Finals title. However, she looks all set to lift the title this time around.
