The 2024 Australian Open had an explosive start to the semi-final rounds in singles. The first semis were played between defending champ Aryna Sabalenka and reigning Grand Slam title winner Coco Gauff. The two had played in the finals of the 2023 US Open, where the American came out on top.

It was a perfect revenge opportunity for the Belarusian, and she took it with both hands. Playing for a place in the Major’s title decider, Sabalenka won the match 7-6(2), 6-4 in 1 hour and 42 minutes to keep her hopes of title defense alive.

With a chance of losing out on her ranking as well, Sabalenka has secured her World No. 2 position. Gauff will, however, climb to the No. 3 ranking despite losing out in the semis. The two players have had good camaraderie between them so far, but following today’s win, Sabalenka did poke some fun at the teen.

Speaking to Aussie legend Jelena Dokic during the on-court interview, the Belarusian praised Gauff and the level of their matches. But on an ending note, she made a cheeky comment, leaving everyone in splits.

She’s an incredible player. I really enjoy playing her. Win or lose, it’s great matches. I really hope in the future we’re gonna play many more finals. Hopefully I’m gonna win all of them.
Said Sabalenka.

Aryna Sabalenka cuts down Coco Gauff’s lead in their H2H

Before today’s clash, the World No. 4 had yet to lose a match in 2024. She took the court with a 10-0 record for the season. As for Sabalenka, she had lost a single match—the finals of the 2024 Brisbane Open to Elena Rybakina

The Belarusian, however, had not lost a single set at the Australian Open. She now reaches the finals, maintaining the streak. Coincidentally, Sabalenka has yet to play a three-setter match this season.

Gauff was leading their head-to-head with a tender 2-match lead at 4-2. However, following today’s semifinal result, Sabalenka has reduced the gap, making it 4-3 in favor of the American. Having leveled the score for Grand Slam encounters by avenging the US Open defeat, Sabalenka has now also cut down the H2H lead.

The defending champ can now relax as the second semi-final will determine her opponent for Saturday’s finals. Dayana Yastremska and Qinwen Zheng will be fighting for the remaining spot in the finals, with both youngsters playing in their maiden Grand Slam semi-final.
