World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka blasted the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) authorities for the poor infrastructure in Cancun, Mexico where the 2023 WTA Finals are scheduled to take place. Sabalenka highlighted the fact that there are only two courts for practice and only one stringer on site.
The Belarusian shared a clip of the practice courts shared by her coach Anton Dubrov, on her social media handles. The caption of the video revealed that there are only two courts for the top eight WTA players who are in Mexico to play in the year-end tournament until the start of the tournament, on Saturday.
“2 practice courts till Saturday, 1 stringer on site,” wrote Dubrov while sharing a clip of the practice courts. Sabalenka, meanwhile, used a ‘head blown’ emoji to describe her feelings on the same as she reshared Dubrov’s post on her Instagram.
It is worth mentioning that the WTA Finals were moved from Guadalajara to Cancun this year on a one-year agreement. The organizers are reportedly also building a 4000-seater stadium for the event. Tournament director Gustavo Santoscoy also mentioned that there would be two alternate practice fields available within the hotel premises for the players. However, the reality is different.
Fans appalled to see such shambolic arrangement for WTA Finals
This social media post from Aryna Sabalenka attracted reactions from the fans. Most of them criticized the WTA for such a shambolic arrangement. While one user pointed out that the reports of WTA struggling financially might be true, one user asked why was the tournament moved out of Guadalajara in the first place.
“I don’t get why they didn’t use the infrastructure they have in Guadalajara,” wrote the user. Check out the other reactions to Aryna Sabalenka’s post criticizing the WTA.
However, there were a few fans who felt two practice courts for eight players were just enough. “I mean how many more practice courts do you need tho realistically? There’s literally 8 people competing,” wrote one user.
How successful the tournament ends up being is a matter of time. But WTA will need to find a long-term solution for the venue problem for such a prestigious tournament.
