Aryna Sabalenka once again displayed her power in Melbourne when she thumped the USA’s Amanda Anisimova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth round of the ongoing Australian Open on Sunday (January 21, 2024).
After the match, the World No, 2 explained why she opened up about the emotional phase she had been dealing with after the death of her father, Sergey Sabalenka.
Sergey was a former ice hockey player who died in November 2019 due to meningitis, at the age of 43. The death of her father immensely affected her, and she eventually dealt with a loss of form on the tennis courts.
I don't know. I felt like my story would probably motivate someone or would help someone in a tough situation to find the way through. Like, when you lose somebody, it's really tough - especially someone like your father, for example.Sabalenka said after the match against Anisimova
Sabalenka never disclosed her struggles during her dark times, but she decided to open up on Netflix’s ‘Break Point’ with the hope that her story would motivate her fans to get up and navigate through the tough situations.
I know that some people are struggling with the same situation. I just felt like it was tough, but you can also find a kind of motivation to keep going in life, keep doing your thing just for the memory of somebody. I really hope that my story will help somebody else in this situation to keep going and keep doing their best.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Barbora Krejcikova head-to-head stats
After beating Amanda Anisimova, Aryna Sabalenka secured a berth in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. She will face the Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova on Tuesday (January 23).
Sabalenka and Krejcikova have faced each other six times in their careers. However, it’s the Belarusian who has the upper hand, as she won five of those matches.
The only time the Czech player could go past the Belarusian was in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open last year when Sabalenka lost with a score of 6-0, 6(2)-7, 1-6. The two last met at the Stuttgart Open in the Round of 16, with Sabalenka winning the match with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Notably, Sabalenka is the defending champion in Melbourne, as she lifted her first Grand Slam title here, her only major title so far. Last year, she secured herself a berth in the final of the US Open but lost to the USA’s Coco Gauff in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6.
