Aryna Sabalenka has been officially crowned the new world number one in women’s tennis. The Belarusian has enjoyed a successful year on tour, where she has managed to lift the Australian Open title and reach the finals of the 2023 US Open. Despite her loss to Coco Gauff in the finals in New York, Aryna Sabalenka leaped above Iga Swiatek in the WTA Rankings, becoming the new World No. 1.

Aryna Sabalenka has often been subject to criticism for her on-court behavior in the past. The 2023 Australian Open champion has been criticized for her lack of emotional control on the court, something she has constantly worked on during the course of the season.

It’s been really difficult to improve this part of my game. I’m a really emotional person on court, but off court, it’s really tough to make me upset. You have to do something really terrible to me. The goal was to bring this Aryna on court,” Sabalenka said.

Aryna Sabalenka has been prone to making several double faults during her service game. Moreover, her reactions to the double faults only compounded her misery. The Belarusian stated that she has now learned to deal with her poor service games, and is in much better shape, mentally and physically.

“I worked really hard. I work with psychologists to get to know myself better. It’s been a lot of work, physically and mentally. I was trying to improve all aspects of my game,” said Sabalenka.

“The thing that helped me improve that part of my game is when I was dealing with all those double faults. I had to learn how to play when I had literally nothing. Just play with my character, just fight for it. When I fixed my serve, I realized that I actually can return well, I can serve well now, and I can move well. Mentally, I’m really strong. Nothing can really destroy me,” she added.

Aryna Sabalenka had a pretty dominant run at the 2023 US Open. However, it was not meant to be a fairytale ending for the second seed, as she was defeated by Coco Gauff in the finals in three sets. The newly crowned world number one won the first set, however, the 19-year-old came back from behind to lift her maiden Grand Slam title.
