Two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open 2023. This is another big blow for the tournament after the recent pullouts by Carlos Alcaraz and Venus Williams. Osaka’s withdrawal will dampen the hopes of the fans who were hoping for some thrilling encounters at Melbourne Park.
Alcaraz and Williams’s withdrawal was caused by the untimely injuries they received before the tournament. The Spanish youngster Alcaraz suffered a leg injury during the training. Williams on the other hand, who was awarded a wildcard picked her injury at the ASB Classics in New Zealand.
As far as Osaka is concerned, the specific reason for her backing out has not been made public. Although the announcement was made by the official Twitter handle of the Australian Open it too did not comment on the reason behind the pull-out.“Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open. We will miss her at #AO2023,” the tweet read.

The 25-year-old Naomi Osaka is not the first big name to withdraw from the season’s first Grand Slam. Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz and American legend Venus Williams too backed out from the tournament due to unfortunate injuries. The absence of these big names from the event will certainly change the expected course of the Australian Open.
Although Alcaraz and Williams’s announcement got the sympathies of the fans Osaka’s decision was altogether met with negative comments on social media. Some fans also cited the Japanese player’s active presence off the court to give their opinions. For the last couple of years, Osaka is investing her time away from tennis to focus on her business ventures which consequently has riled some of her fans.
