Novak Djokovic has had to take a lot this year due to his vaccine status. He was deported from Australia and wasn’t allowed to compete in the Golden Swing either. He won his first title of the season in Rome but lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open quarterfinals. He bounced back to win his 7th Wimbledon title and then after a two month hiatus, won the Tel Aviv Open.

Djokovic has lost just 13 games so far this week. He defeated Cristian Garin and Botic Van de Zandschulp in the initial rounds and then eased past Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals in straight sets 6-4,6-3.

Daniil Medvedev suffered a heartbreaking loss in the hands of Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final earlier this year and followed it by reaching the semifinals of the Mexican Open. He missed the majority of the clay season due to an injury but managed to reach the fourth round of the French Open. He then made back-to-back finals on grass before winning the Los Cabos Open. He then reached the semifinal of the Cincinnati Masters but couldn’t defend his US Open title as he lost to Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round.

Medvedev has been flawless all week and has just dropped 11 games so far. He defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Emil Ruusuvuori in the early rounds before getting past Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarterfinal in straight sets 6-1,6-1.

Djokovic and Medvedev are meeting for the first time after the 2021 US Open final and nothing less than fireworks are expected from the match. Both men bode very well with hard courts and are peaking at the right time. They have been absolutely ruthless throughout this week and would fancy a fair shit at each other. The court will suit Djokovic’s game better but Medvedev has shown his adaptive nature to its best. Expect a thrilling match with Djokovic using his experience to edge past Medvedev.
