ATP Finals 2022: Rafael Nadal gets lucky with the draw, Novak Djokovic handed a nightmare group
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at ATP Finals 2022
The last tournament of the year- the 2022 ATP Finals will begin next week and the groups for the same are out. After World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament, Rafael Nadal will start as the top seed. He will head the Green Group while No.2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will lead the Red Group.
Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Taylor Fritz are the four contestants in the Green Group. Nadal, who is the top seed, has been put into a fairly easy group. He played for the first time since his loss in Paris last week but, to his dismay, lost his first match to Tommy Paul.
Casper Ruud hasn’t had the best last 2 months on tour but did pretty well for the rest of the season. He made it to two major finals and also reached other finals at some big tournaments. Felix Auger-Aliassime is the most in-form player in the group, having won 3 back-to-back titles after the US Open. He also made it to the semifinal at Bercy before he lost to eventual champion Holger Rune.
Taylor Fritz was the first alternate to Turin and qualified after Alcaraz withdrew from the ATP Finals. He hasn’t done pretty well of late, but can be very lethal on indoor hard courts.
Red Group- The Group of death at the 2022 ATP Finals
Stefanos Tsitsipas will lead the Red Group, which consists of Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Novak Djokovic. This group can also be termed as the group of death, given the ruthlessness of these 4 players on indoor hard courts. Out of these 4, 3 players have won the ATP Finals previously while in the Green Group, none of the players have won the ATP Finals.
Medvedev is slowly getting back in form while Rublev has the strokes from baseline to beat anyone on a given day. Despite losing the title at Bercy, Djokovic has shown some amazing form and will back himself to finish the season on a high note.
