World No.9 Hubert Hurkacz has made a last-minute entry to the event after Stefanos Tsitsipas retired after sustaining an injury. Novak Djokovic will take on the Polish ace in the third match of the group stage round on Thursday.

Hurkacz has entered the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals as a surprising ninth seed after Stefanos Tsitsipas had to pull back from the event due to an injury. The Shanghai Masters champion has replaced the Greek player in the Green group after Tsitsipas hurt his back while playing against Holger Rune.

The 26-year-old Pole played his last match in the quarters at the recently concluded Bercy Open, where he took on event finalist, Grigor Dimitrov. Hurkacz lost 1-6, 6-4, 4-6 to the Bulgarian. Prior to that, he took on sixth seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime, in the finals of the Swiss Indoors event in Basel. He lost the match to the defending champ in straight sets.

Djokovic, on the other hand, enters into the final match of the robin round with one win and one loss at the tournament so far. The Serb suffered a 5-7, 7-6, 6-7 loss in his previous match against Italian No.1, Jannik Sinner, to end his winning streak. Prior to that, in the opening match, the Paris Masters winner registered a victory against Rune. The duo engaged in a thrilling three-setter as he beat the 20-year-old 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

Djokovic leads the Polish ace Hubert Hurkacz 6-0 in the duo’s head-to-head. Their upcoming clash will mark their third meeting of the ongoing season. The pair previously clashed in their Round of 16 match at Wimbledon. Serbia’s top seed, Novak Djokovic, ousted Hurkacz over 4 sets and scored 7-6, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 to claim a ticket to the quarters.

At the Dubai Tennis Championships prior to that, Djokovic beat Hurkacz, who was seeded at No.5 in straight sets in the quarters, before Daniil Medvedev ousted the Serb in the semi-final round back in March. The Polish top seed would be on the lookout to claim his first win against the World No.1 in his upcoming match.
