Shelton arrives into the clash on the back of a first-round scare against home crowd favorite Taro Daniel. The American southpaw defeated the Japanese pro 3-6,6-4,7-6(2) to get his 22nd tour-level singles win of the season. The World No.19 arrives into the tournament on the back of an impressive showing at the Shanghai Masters.

Shelton defeated the 6th-seeded Italian Jannik Sinner en route to a quarter-final finish. He was narrowly defeated in the quarter final by his American counterpart Sebastian Korda in a 3-setter.

At the recently concluded US Open, Shelton reached the semi final where he was defeated by the eventual champion and World No.1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Meanwhile, Jordan Thompson enjoyed one of the biggest wins in his career as he defeated the 3rd seed Alexander Zverev 6-3,6-4 to reach the 2nd round. Ranked 60th in the world, the Aussie has won 19 singles matches so far this season.

The pair will be facing off for the first time as they look to move one step closer to winning their first tour-level singles title.
