America’s No.2, Paul, ousted his German opponent, Daniel Altmaier in his latest encounter. In a match that lasted three sets, the 26-year-old demolished Altmaier with a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. At the Shanghai Masters event, Paul lost to the tournament’s runner-up, Andrey Rublev, in his Round of 16 match. At the China Open, Paul lost his opening match to World No.3, Daniil Medvedev.

On the other hand, McDonald beat Australia’s Max Purcell in the first round to book his ticket to the upcoming clash with his compatriot. In his opening match at Ariake Coliseum, McDonald claimed victory, ousting his opponent in straight sets. He sealed his ticket to the Round of 16, with a 7-5, 6-4 win.

At the Shanghai Masters, the 27-year-old lost his second-round match to 20th seed, Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. The American, however, reached the quarter-finals in Zhuhai, where he lost to the title-winner, Karen Khachanov. McDonald finished in the Top 8 at the Canadian Open as well.
