Carlos Alcaraz is currently playing in a league of his own. He became the first player in tennis history to beat both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the same clay-court tournament. In Madrid, he eased past the likes of Nikoloz Basilashvili and Cameron Norrie in the initial rounds before stunning Nadal in the quarterfinal. He then backed it up by beating Djokovic in the semifinals in three sets 6-7(5),7-5,7-6(5).

The 19-year-old is one of the players of the 2022 season and started his season with a valiant third-round outing at the Australian Open. He then won the biggest title of his career at Rio before upgrading it to Miami Masters. He also won the Barcelona Open ahead of the Madrid Masters.

Alexander Zverev started the season with a Round of 16 outing at the Australian Open. He then made it to the final of ATP Marseille before getting kicked out of the Mexican Open due to his behavior. He lost his opening match at the Indian Wells Masters but bounced back by reaching the quarterfinals at Miami Masters. He also reached the semifinal of the Monte Carlo Masters but lost his opening match at Munich.

This week in Madrid, he got the better of Marin Cilic in the second round before thrashing Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. In the quarterfinal, he eased past Felix Auger Aliassime and then defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals in three sets 6-4,3-6,6-2.
