Rafael Nadal is the king of clay, no doubt about it. The Spaniard and 21-time Grand slam winner has recently come back to play his first tournament on clay after his rib injury at the Indian Wells tournament. The 35-year-old went on to the quarter-finals only to lose to fellow Spaniard and rising star Carlos Alcaraz in a grueling three-set match.

Although fans are disappointed that the heavy favorite for the title and king of clay could not continue playing the match, they can rest assured that he will be playing in the Rome Masters.

While the whole world is disappointed that Rafael Nadal cannot march on to the semis, with the only consolation being that Carlos Alcaraz was the player who moved on, Jim Courier begs to differ.

In an observation after the match, the former American player said that it was a good thing that Nadal got eliminated as he gets more time to prepare for the Rome Masters which is more similar to Roland Garros conditions-wise. “I think, on many levels, this is a good result for Rafa to actually lose this match on a couple of levels.” “He gets four days off to play at Rome, which is at sea-level, which much more mimics what he’ll face at Roland Garros from a conditions standpoint. And he gets a chance now to regroup, hopefully, kind of reassess where he is, knowing that his rib is no longer a problem.” Said the former world no. 1 to Tennis Channel.

He also added that Nadal must have injured his leg due to the long number of hours he played for the two consecutive matches and rumors were that he was limping to the press conference.

“How’s his foot? That’s a question. I wasn’t sure his foot was going to feel good after the 2-hour match today, the 3-hour match yesterday. Rumors that he was hobbling around to his press conference. We know that’s going to be a present problem for him, ongoing.” Asked Courier as Nadal was said to have been limping.

However, Jim Courier added that Rafael Nadal should be proud of what he has accomplished, as now he knows that his rib can handle the strain and look forward to Rome and Roland Garros where he has won an impressive 10 and 13 times respectively.

“I think, all things considered, a good week for Rafa. Came out, got some match toughness, found out his rib could hold up, and now he’s pointing towards Rome and Roland Garros.”
