Novak Djokovic vs Hubert Hurkacz: Match Preview
Novak Djokovic has had a tumultuous year on tour as his first event was in Dubai where he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Jiri Vesely. He then featured at the Monte Carlo Masters but crashed out of the tournament after losing to Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, who eventually reached ended up as the runners up. He then plied his trade at the Serbia Open back at home and there he hustled his way through to the finals but fell apart against Andrey Rublev.
His Madrid Open journey started well with a dominant win over Frenchman Gael Monfils as he won 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last 16. However, the round of 16 clash against Andy Murray which was much anticipated did not happen as Murray had to withdraw from the event after suffering some illness. Djokovic got a walkover and will now face Hubert Hurkacz in the battle of the last eight players.
Hubert Hurkacz on the other hand has had a mixed bag outing on tour as he reached the semifinals in Dubai and Miami but failed to go beyond as he lost to both eventual winners. The Polish tennis player reached the quarterfinals at the Monte Carlo Master but went down fighting against Grigor Dimitrov.
Seeded 12th at the Madrid Open, Hurkacz started his campaign with a hard fought win over Hugo Delien7-5, 6-7(11), 6-3. He then faced the challenge of Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina which he also saw off in three sets to book a clash with Dusan Lajovic, whom he dominated 7-5, 6-3 to face Djokovic in the quarterfinals. He has spent more time on court than the Serb and will be looking to make good use of that factor.
Novak Djokovic vs Hubert Hurkacz: Head to head
Novak Djokovic have faced Hubert Hurkacz three times in the past and have a perfect record against the Pole. The last meeting between the two players was very entertaining as Djokovic won the tie in three sets where he made a comeback from a set down at the Paris Masters last year.
Novak Djokovic vs Hubert Hurkacz: Prediction
Novak Djokovic has had limited match practice this year on tour whereas Hubert Hurkacz has been on the court for more time and will be aiming for his third quarterfinal this season after reaching the semifinals in Dubai and Miami so he will be confident to get the better off the World No.1 and progress to the semifinals.
However, Djokovic has shown tremendous fight at the Serbia Open and it will be no different against the Pole as he tries to find a way past him to reach the semifinals at the Madrid Open. The 20-time Grand Slam winner was in superb rhythm against Monfils as he simply rolled over the Frenchman. But he desperately needed the match against Andy Murray to assess his level right now. But since he did not get to play that game he will hope that he turns up against the big-serving Hurkacz.
Prediction: Novak Djokovic in three sets.
