Rafael Nadal has had an unbelievable start to the 2022 season. Returning from injury, he won the Melbourne Summer Set before leaving his mark at the Australian Open. He won his 21st major title in Melbourne where he came back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final. He then followed it up with a title triumph at the Mexican Open. Going ahead, he reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters where he lost to Taylor Fritz. He later revealed that he was suffering from a hairline fracture in the ribs which eventually ruled him out for a month.
He started his clay season in Madrid this week where he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round. In the Round of 16, he got the better of David Goffin in three sets 6-3,5-7,7-6(9).
As for Carlos Alcaraz, he has been the find of the season. He has seen an exponential rise where he won his maiden ATP 500 title in Rio after a heroic third-round exit at the Australian Open. He then reached the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters before winning his maiden Masters title at Miami. After a poor outing at Monte Carlo, he won his third title of the season at Barcelona which also announced his entry into the Top 10 of the world.
This week in Madrid, he eased past Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round and then defeated 9th seed Cameron Norrie in the third round in three sets 6-4,6-7(4),6-3 to book a date with Rafa.

This will be the 3rd meeting between the duo. Nadal leads the H2H 2-0. They last met at Indian Wells this year where Nadal won in three sets.

The match is expected to be a thriller given the big strides Alcaraz has taken in recent months. He got thrashed by Nadal on his 18th birthday in Caja Magica and now, a year later, he is a completely different player. Nadal will be the favorite on paper for obvious reasons but one cannot rule Alcaraz out. Expect a tight match between a master and his apprentice with Nadal clutching past Alcaraz to enter the semifinals.
