Defending champion Novak Djokovic has found his form at the right moment. After a surprising start where he conceded one set each in the first two rounds, he is back to his usual best. He dispatched his fan Tomas Etcheverry in straight-sets. In the fourth round, Adrian Mannarino ate a double bagel fresh from the Serb’s oven.

Nole won the match 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 to reach his 58th Grand Slam quarter-final. It is also his qualification into the quarter-final in Melbourne Park for the 14th time. With improvements after each round, the Serb looks well set for another title. Even the great Rod Laver believes the trophy should already be having Djokovic’s name.

While the World No. 1 will play in his 14th quarter-final, Taylor Fritz will make his debut in the last-8 at Melbourne Park. The American defeated last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling 4-set battle to reach the second week. Fritz won the match 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 despite the Greek’s match point antics.

Fritz was tested to the fifth set in the opening round itself by Facundo Acosta. But since then, the former World No. 5 has shown better control in his performances. With his lady luck Morgan Riddle also coming up with different bets to see him win, the American will have to put in a big shift against the King of Melbourne Park.

This will be the ninth meeting between the two players. Djokovic currently leads the head-to-head 8-0 with straight-set wins in 7 of those matches. This will also be their second meeting at the Australian Open. They previously clashed in the third round in 2021 with Djokovic winning the match in five sets.

Coming into the clash, Djokovic is 6-1 for the season. He has a career hardcourt record of 412-53 while having a splendid overall career record of 831-129. On the other side of the net, Fritz will come in with a 5-1 season record. He is 218-112 on the hardcourts while being 357-218 across all surfaces in his career.

Looking at the numbers, it is a clear win for the Serbian. But Fritz has improved drastically and has certainly earned enough credits to be considered a worthy opponent. However, given their individual form and historical records, it looks unlikely that the American will be able to register his first win against Nole.
