The 2024 Australian Open is all set to blow the whistle on January 14 at Melbourne Park. However, with the season’s much-anticipated Grand Slam around the corner, the tournament officials recently revealed an increase in prize money for the players.

Meanwhile, the Melbourne event will also witness the return of Rafael Nadal to professional tennis. The Spaniard had been sidelined from the 2023 season due to injury concerns that rendered him unable to make any appearances on the tour for the entire year.

Tennis officials at the Australian Open recently announced a massive increase to the slam’s prize money for the 2024 season, upping the pool by a jaw-dropping 13% compared to last year. It is worth noting that in August 2023, the US Open authorities increased the prize money and player compensation to a colossal $65 million, the highest record set among all four Grand Slams.

In the latest statement put out by the tournament’s director, Craig Tiley, the event will offer better prize distribution for players participating in the qualifying rounds for both men and women categories. The statement read:

We've upped prize money for every round at the Australian Open with the major increases in qualifying and the early rounds of singles and doubles.

Top competitors of the sport have already touched down in Melbourne ahead of their Australian Open preparations, including three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray who suffered a third-round defeat at the hands of Roberto Bautista Agut in the tournament’s previous edition.

A brief look at the prize money for the 2024 Australian Open

The Australian Open 2024 recently notified that they will offer players 86.5 million Australian dollars ($58.4 million) as part of the event’s total prize money.

At the Melbourne event, a significant increase in the prize money has been made for the first-round qualifiers. They will notably receive an appraisal of 20% i.e. 31,250 Australian dollars (about $21,000). The men’s and women’s singles champions for the season will mint a staggering 3.15 million Australian dollars each (about $2.15 million).

For the Australian Open 2024, Novak Djokovic will serve as the men’s singles defending champion for the event, having won the slam in the 2023 edition for a record-extending 10th time. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka will be the women’s singles defending champion for the season.
