The pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden crushed Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6(7-0), 7-5 to win the men’s doubles title at the 2024 Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday (January 27). At the press conference, Bopanna revealed his unconventional fitness routine that helped him pull off the difficult task at the age of 43.
The reason behind the success, according to the 43-year-old, is how he maintains and manages his body and time, which helps him perform better. The Indian veteran also revealed that he has been taking an ice bath almost every day since arriving in Australia, which helps him immensely in his recovery.

So I have stopped going to the gym. I really do specific kinds of work for my body. I do a lot of yoga. In the morning, I do some meditation to just start off the day. As I get older, I feel I can't sleep past 7:30 or 8:00. I'm up no matter what. Then I have some time by myself, and I enjoy that.Bopanna said at the press conference
Bopanna added that he won’t stop playing tennis despite getting older, as long as he loves playing the sport.
As long as I'm enjoying and playing my best tennis, I don't see there is any reason to really stop at the moment.Bopanna added
Rohan Bopanna becomes oldest Grand Slam champion, PM Narendra Modi showers praise
After winning the doubles title at the Australian Open, Rohan Bopanna became the oldest player to win a Grand Slam title in men’s doubles. Before Bopanna, Jean-Julien Rojer used to be the oldest Grand Slam doubles champion when he won the title at the age of 40 along with his doubles partner Marco Arevola at the French Open in 2022.

After Bopanna scripted the record, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to shower praise on the champion. He called Bopanna phenomenally talented for showing that “age is no bar.”

In the final, Bopanna and his Aussie partner Ebden tied the scores in the first set, claiming it by winning the tie-breaker 7-0. The Indo-Aussie pair then ensured the second didn’t get pushed into the third set, and finally won it with a scoreline of 7-6(7-0), 7-5.
Notably, before this Australian Open title, Bopanna had only clinched one mixed doubles title. He won it with his mixed doubles partner, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski, at the French Open in 2017.
Bopanna is also the only third Indian player to emerge as a winner in Grand Slam men’s doubles. Before him, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi achieved the feat.
