This was Bianca’s third consecutive straight-set win this week in Rome having defeated Emma Raducanu in the first round (Emma retired when the score was 6-2, 2-1 in Bianca’s favour) and then beating Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the second round. The win over Martic marks the first time since the start of the last season that the Canadian has registered a hattrick of straight-set wins.

Martic hit 2 aces, made 6 double faults and could convert only 1 breakpoint from the 7 opportunities she had to finish the match with 62 points to her name. Bianca from the other side of the court fired 4 aces, committed 3 double faults and converted 3 of the 4 breakpoint opportunities she had to claim the victory with 72 points to her name.

With the win over Martic, Bianca will now take on defending champion and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek who comes into the quarter-finals with a win over former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. Bianca will take on Iga for the first time on Tour. Iga’s form and number this season are enough evidence of how difficult it can be for Andreescu who is playing just her third tournament this season and will have to bring the best tennis of her season to overcome the current World No. 1.
