Barbora Krejcikova has also jumped into the Ukraine-Russia conflict and its consequences on sports debate. She has used some harsh words for the Russians. She believes that Russian tennis professionals are to be blamed for the increase in tensions between Russians and Ukrainian tennis professionals and the rest of the competition.

The Czech tennis professional indicated in her latest interview that the Russian tennis professionals may be involved in activities that may be causing tensions to simmer and intoxicating the environment on the Tour.

“Yes, I feel the tension. On both sides. But there are Russians who create it. They don’t speak publicly, but you see what they do in the locker room. Personally, I try to avoid them,” she said.

Barbora Krejcikova is not the first player to have raised this issue. Many players before too have alleged Russian and Belarusian players of raising the heat in the locker room. Ukrainian players such as Lesia Tsurenko, Elina Svitolina, and Marta Kostyuk have been at the forefront of demanding justice for Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict.

But recently, many top players on the Tour have joined in criticizing the Russians. Iga Swiatek has been quite vocal on this issue for some time. Since Anastasia Potapova sparked a row when she came onto the court of the Indian Wells Open 2023, wearing a Moscow-based football club team jersey. She has also criticized WTA for a lenient attitude toward Russian and Belarusian players forcing the player’s bodies into action.

I feel like tennis, from the beginning, could do a bit better in showing everybody that tennis players are against the war. I feel they could do more to make that point and tell their views, and help us cope a bit better in the locker room because the atmosphere there is pretty tense,” she had said.

Similarly, Petra Kvitova has been against overturning of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s (AELTC) ban on the participation of Russian and Belarusian players in Wimbledon. She is also advocating for Russian and Belarusian players’ ban on participation in the upcoming Olympic Games.

“I appreciate that Wimbledon had a tough time last year not giving the points, that Belarusian and Russian didn’t play. And I think they shouldn’t be allowed, actually, in my opinion, either to Olympics. I’m just still a bit on the Ukrainian side of this,” she had told.
