The European clay swing is going to get even hotter as the ATP Tour is now being commenced in Spain for couple of weeks. The first stop is the historic and incredible city of Barcelona. The 70th edition of the Barcelona Open is scheduled to be held from April 17 to April 23.

This ATP 500 event is the second tournament scheduled for each year. It will be followed by Madrid Open and Italian Open which are both ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. Some of the top seeds such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner amongst others will be in action at this competition.

Carlos Alcaraz who is the current World No.1 will seek to defend his title. Also, with absence of the current World No.1 Novak Djokovic he is going to play as top seed. Frances Tiafoe, Cameron Norrie, Alex de Minaur, and Karen Khachanov will also take part in this competition. Unfortunately, 12-time winner Rafael Nadal will not be part of this event.

Besides the 22-time Grand Slam champion, Daniil Medvedev, Pablo Carreno Busta, Sebastian Korda, and Brandon Nakashima, has also decided to withdraw from the event. However, Fernando Verdasco and Matteo Arnaldi amongst others got a wildcard entries.

This year’s Barcelona Open is going to be very special for Feliciano Lopez as he is going to participate in this competition for the 22nd time. But this is also going to be his last tournament on the tour and his career as he seeks to retire after this competition.

The inaugural edition was held in 1953. It was earlier part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit. It is held every year at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona. Rafael Nadal has won the tournament record 12 times. He also holds the record of winning this tournament 8 times in a row from 2005-2013.
