In a rather bizarre and unfortunate incident, Brazilian tennis ace Beatriz Haddad Maia suffered multiple cuts on her hands and had to take stitches after the shower box of her hotel room exploded in her hands. The Brazilian also had to pull out of the WTA Guadalajara Open, where she was seeded seventh for the same reason.
The Brazilian explained what exactly happened in her hotel room. Maia said that while she was getting out of the shower box (a chamber-like structure made of class for showers) and tried to open the door it burst and she ended up injuring her hands as well as some other parts of her body. However, Maia confirmed that there was nothing major to be worried about.
“Other than that, apart from the scare, I’m fine. It could be something much more serious. I will need a few days now to heal the wounds so I can be back for the last part of the year, and continue fighting for my 2023 goals,” wrote Maia in the caption of her Instagram post with the pictures of her both hands.
How has 2023 fared for Beatriz Haddad Maia?
Talking about the Brazilian’s campaign so far in 2023, Beatriz Haddad Maia has not had a great year but it has not been the worst either. The World No.15 has won a doubles title with Victoria Azarenka, against the American pair of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. In the singles category, Maia took part in all four Grand Slams but could not go the distance in any of them.
The Brazilian’s best showing at a Grand Slam ever in her career came at the French Open where Maia reached the semifinals before going down to reigning champion Iga Swiatek. At the year’s last Grand Slam, the 2023 US Open, Beatriz managed to survive till the second round. The Brazilian also played at the San Diego Open and reached the quarterfinals.
At the Guadalajara Open, Beatriz Haddad Maia was drawn in the first quarter, the same as Ons Jaebur. She was expected to meet the Tunisian in the quarterfinals and might even lift her first singles title of the year but all hopes are in vain now as the Brazilian recovers from this freak injury she suffered. Maia had promised to come back stronger and sooner.
